We have children so it was important to us to create a space where our whole
family would feel at home. The rug looks like sisal but it has chenille in it so it’s
soft for little crawling knees. My mother made the Plexiglas chairs in the 1970s
and I had the good fortune of taking them over. They’re pretty indestructible.
Our previous house had no storage so I designed the built-ins: now we can
surround ourselves with our favourite things and have room to stow toys so we
don’t feel like our space is overrun with them. We’ve started to collect pieces
that are special to us: books we’ve connected with, a clock from my husband’s
grandfather, a tin box that belonged to my grandfather. We like to mix them
with contemporary objects we’ve received as gifts or discovered on our travels.
My mom is wonderful at putting things together in a way that’s clean and
contemporary. I’ve always admired that. Pillows, Fluf Design; painting by Kathleen Weich,
Louise Lipman Contemporary Art; Martha Sturdy tables, Hollace Cluny; millwork, Edwards & Wilson.
