Just when I thought I’d seen it all, I discovered a great
home-concept store that made my heart flutter! Last
fall, I spent a few days at Maison et Objet, the annual
housewares trade show in Paris-Nord. After days of
walking the hundreds of booths, I’d had my fill of
furniture and bedding. Time for a little fun.
I strolled down rue Saint-Honoré planning to people-watch in Colette, the original fashion/lifestyle boutique
and concept store. On the way, I passed by a small
storefront with a handsome vignette of a country
picnic: leather riding boots, a great woven basket and
a leather armchair — reminiscent of the Ralph Lauren
look, but less grand, more rustic. The sign over the door
read Flamant. As in Flemish, I wondered? Gingerly, I
stepped inside the door, not planning to stay….
Flamant is one of those stores that makes you want to
rush home and redo everything. Dangerous, I know. But
because the look is rooted in the classical and familiar
with a soft neutral palette, it’s easy to imagine coaxing
your rooms into this subtle style.
Think of a Parisian Pottery Barn, or Crate & Barrel
meets Tuscan traditional. When you look hard, you see
that there is nothing you haven’t seen before in the
individual pieces. It’s the way they put everything
together that feels fresh and exciting. More proof that
the magic is in the mix.
The foundation of Flamant is its paint palette. One
wall of the store features all the colours and small
testing pots for sale. Slate grey, linen beige, stone,
sand, charcoal and straw are the kind of
buying less chancy.
