NEW WAYS TO DECORATE IN ’09
INSTANT UPDATES FOR WALLS, WINDOWS AND CEILINGS.
After years of windows covered in simple,
solid colours, full-length drapes in saturated
hues and bold patterns are softening
contemporary interiors, giving spaces a more
decorated feel — one of the year’s hottest
looks. Drapery fabric, Jane Churchill Morton Stripe in
Green (J562F-02) (left) and Jane Churchill Appleby in
Green (J543F-02). At Primavera Interior Furnishings.
Rethink the ubiquitous white ceiling and
consider a daring do-over with a graphic
treatment, such as patterned wallpaper. The
effect is chic and cosy, especially when the
same print is repeated on walls. Limit your
palette to two colours to keep it livable.
Supersize displays for a bold, more-is-more
look. Even the humblest items can become a
dramatic focal point; look for inexpensive finds
at discount and dollar stores, then buy in bulk.
Uniformity is key when playing with volume,
so pieces should be identical in colour or
shape. Tablecloth fabric, Jane Churchill Medway
Stripe in Dark Blue (J571F-05). At Primavera Interior
Furnishings. Visit www.primavera.ca. — K.B.

Christie’s auction house recently held its first-ever contemporary design
sale, a sure sign that the category is coming into its own. The sale included
work by international designers such as Marc Newson, Zaha Hadid, Ettore
Sottsass and Dutch designer Tejo Remy, whose perfectly chaotic You Can’t
Lay Down Your Memory chest of drawers, created for Droog Design in
1991, fetched $32,500. The piece’s influence on up-and-coming designs is
already evident, with Established & Sons’ Stack by Shay Alkalay and Ligne
Roset’s Aphrodite (not shown) offering the look for less. — K.B.
