and dining rooms, and to

includes giant “diamond

elegant tableware and
perennial taste for shades of blue and lots of shine. Indeed, even the view
outside her floor-to-ceiling windows — of the Royal Ontario Museum’s
angular “crystal” — falls in with her sophisticated, sparkly vision.
After leaving behind her previous 350-square-foot mini-apartment two
years ago, where her bed sometimes doubled as living-room seating, Mens
was ready to flex her decorating muscle in her new one-bedroom space.
“I knew I wasn’t ready to buy yet, but I needed to get out of my bachelorette.
My first place was so little and dark — and I loved it. But I wanted a
complete departure in my new place, so I gave away, sold or repurposed
almost everything,” she explains. “And then I took all my savings and put
them into this place.”
What she accomplished is impressive — transforming a basic 625-square-
foot high-rise apartment, complete with parquet flooring, wall-to-wall
windows, and a small, open living/dining space, into an airy, elegant interior
full of treasured personal pieces, chic new furniture, and soft, neutral
colours punctuated by a palette of cool blues. With the help of her mother,
who painted non-stop for an entire day, Lindsay replaced a cloying yellow
scheme with coats of soft grey and white. Subtle silvery wallpaper defines
the dining area. Shine is a repeating theme here, and not just at Christmas.
“I like glam, and I like sparkle, but I try not to go overboard,” says Lindsay.
“I love blue as a Christmas colour and the sparkle of blue and silver together.
It’s not traditional, but it does feel Christmasy and cosy at night.”
