a living room
Establishing a cohesive palette will help tie together the disparate styles in the
room. Your sofa is a little more traditional, but since it has simple lines and a
neutral colour it’s something you can work into a more contemporary look. The rug
and lamps are the pieces that look the most out of place. Consider a table lamp like
the Bauhaus Lamp from Lucky 7 Lampwerks (shown, through Hollace Cluny, www.
hollacecluny.ca) — its simple stainless steel base and drum shade will contribute to
a more modern look. Cover the floor with broadloom bound in a coordinating twill
border. Elte’s Agora wool broadloom in Poplar (shown, www.elte.com) has a classic
herringbone texture and will coordinate well with your sofa fabric.
Your armless chairs are fine as they are, but if you do want to change them, soft
grey velvet upholstery is a good choice. Try Joanne Fabrics Figaro velvet in Pewter
(shown, to the trade, www.joannefabrics.com). Then, provide contrast with simple
patterned toss pillows on the chairs, like GH Interiors’ pillows in Bocce Flax
(shown, www.ghinteriors.com). Have some additional pillows made up in the velvet
chair upholstery fabric, and use them on the sofa to tie the furniture pieces together.
The idea of an accent wall is a good one, but since your current wall colour
doesn’t relate to any other pieces in the room, it stands out too much. Instead, hang
wallpaper here. Pattern SK153124 from the Shand Kydd II Collection through Blue
Mountain Wallcoverings (shown, www.blmtn.com) has a pattern in muted tones
of taupe and grey that will add interest without commanding too much attention.
Hang pleated drapery panels on a brushed-nickel rod on either side of the bay
window. Joanne Fabrics’ Loden (shown, www.joannefabrics.com) has a nice
horizontal ribbed texture. Use the same fabric on the window seat. Block the view
of your neighbor’s house with a window film that gives the appearance of etched
glass — look at 3M’s Fasara Interior Design Window Film in White Pearl from The
Home Depot ( www.homedepot.ca).
To complement your round glass end table, replace your ottoman
with a pair of metal and glass tables like Ethan Allen’s Collectors
Classics Cube coffee tables 288110 (shown, www.ethanallen.com).
